Update to Blackberry Enterprise Server

What is BES10?

BlackBerry® Enterprise Service 10 (BES 10) is the evolution of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, ActiveSync, and BlackBerry Mobile Fusion. It will allow organizations to manage their mobile deployment with a single platform. The following will be supported:

  • BlackBerry 7 OS and prior smartphones
  • BlackBerry 10 devices
  • BlackBerry PlayBook tablets
  • iOS and Android™ smartphones and tablets

What will the components and requirements be for BES 10?

BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 will be a complete solution that includes several components to manage multiple smartphones and tablets. Management occurs through a single, unified web-based administration console that will provide one place to manage all of the devices listed above.

In addition to the unified management console, the components of BES 10 will initially include current products already in market:

  • BlackBerry® Device Service (BDS) – supporting BlackBerry PlayBook tablets and BlackBerry 10 smartphones when they launch in Q1 2013 through the use of Microsoft ActiveSync for email and PIM synchronization
  • Universal Device Service (UDS) – providing Enterprise Mobility Management functions for iOS and Android devices
  • Integration with existing BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) 5.0.3 and above

When will BES10 launch?

BES 10 will launch with the first BlackBerry 10 devices in Q1 of calendar year 2013.

Will multiple servers be needed to support BES10?

With the initial launch of BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, BES 5+ will require its own server, while BlackBerry Device Service and Universal Device Service can reside on separate servers or be combined on the same physical or virtual server. Should you opt to work with virtual servers, we fully support this type of deployment. Today, BlackBerry Mobile Fusion operates in a similar fashion, with BES 5+ requiring one server, and both BDS and UDS able to be deployed on a single server or on separate servers.

In an update scheduled for May 2013, customers will be able to install BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 on the same physical server that is currently running BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 5, enabling organizations to securely manage all of their BlackBerry smartphones & tablets, in addition to iOS® and Android™ devices, from a single platform.

What version of BES Servers will work with BES10?

BES 5.0.3 and above will be compatible with BES10. If you have a prior version of BES, it will continue to operate as normal. You just won’t be able to manage devices connected to that older BES version through the unified BES10 interface.

Managing iOS and Android Devices

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion extends the BlackBerry mobile device management to iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. BlackBerry Mobile Fusion supports the latest MDM capabilities available in iOS and Android, and is designed to enable administrators to apply corporate policies and configurations to manage and secure these devices. Additionally, customers will be able to leverage the application management capabilities of BlackBerry Mobile Fusion to manage the distribution of mobile applications to employees on these platforms.

What happens if I’ve already installed BlackBerry Mobile Fusion?

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion will allow you to manage BlackBerry PlayBook tablets as well as iOS and Android devices today; it will also prepare you for a simple and straightforward upgrade to BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 once it’s available in early 2013, when it launches together with the first of our new BlackBerry 10 smartphones.

How does BES10 use Microsoft ActiveSync?

With BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0, the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet adds support for Microsoft ActiveSync technology. ActiveSync is a common email/PIM synchronization and transport protocol, which is used by Microsoft® Exchange and other on-premise and cloud mail/messaging providers. Microsoft ActiveSync on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is designed to allow consumers to connect to popular mail platforms such as Gmail® or Windows Live™. Individuals and small businesses can also use its transport functions for integration with Microsoft® Exchange, IBM® Lotus® Notes Traveler, and other Microsoft ActiveSync enabled systems.

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion leverages Microsoft ActiveSync as an email and PIM sync protocol while providing enterprises with many of the same advantages that a BlackBerry Enterprise Server does for a BlackBerry smartphone. Namely, a straightforward yet highly secure connectivity model: proven BlackBerry end-to-end 256-bit encryption, and a behind-the-firewall path for applications, the browser, email, and PIM.

Post-Olympics, 4G is lining up in the network fast lane

O2’s Chief Executive Ronan Dunne explains how O2 is preparing for 4G in the wake of the most digitally connected event Britain has ever seen

2012 Olympic glory has shown Great Britain at its best. The sense of community, celebration and connectivity across our nation over the last three weeks has been unique and exceptional. Quite simply – and to echo a cast of thousands – it has brought a nation together.

But don’t just take my word for it – this has been evident through the behaviour of O2’s 23 million customers. Throughout the period of the Olympics, O2 customers sent just under 4 billion text messages, made 2.2 billion voice calls and used 3.3 billion kb of data. At the busiest hours in the Olympic Park, our network carried more traffic than any other major UK city. Data usage over the two weeks versus the same period in 2011 was up by nearly 80%.

This is hardly surprising if you think about the sheer enormity of social media attention and interactivity the games have driven – the BBC itself now prides itself on delivering the first ever ‘digital games’. As a network provider we knew it would be huge and we weren’t wrong. Our £50 million network investment and the construction of the O2 Olympic Management Centre in central London were necessary to give our customers the service they needed to simultaneously celebrate our 65 Olympic medals using their mobiles.

O2’s mission control team at the O2 Olympic Management Centre in central London

Sadly the Olympics may not return to Great Britain for another few decades, but in its wake it has left a digital legacy. The games have ignited an amplified passion for using mobile data services. The explosion in data use for social media, mobile apps and video streaming during the Olympics was not only exceptional, but may well signal the start of a whole new trend. We have spent the last two years predicting it, and investing and building our network ahead of time to support what our customers are demanding of us. Our next challenge is to predict and plan for the new world, the next digital revolution and of course, the trends of Rio 2016.

I’ve said before that as an industry we’re doing an excellent job of coping with the ever-increasing demand. O2 alone invests £1.5 million every day in its networks as part of our effort to ensure that customers continue to get great performance from their mobile devices. And the stage is now set for the introduction of a whole new technology.

The Government is in the process of planning for an auction of new mobile network spectrum (planned for early 2013), which will release the airwaves to power the next generation of mobile services for everyone in the UK. The introduction of 4G or LTE mobile technology will increase capacity, quality and speed for mobile users (we estimate that mobile broadband capacity will increase by 30 times from today’s levels). O2 has played a constructive and active part in the auction consultation process over the last two years with the aim of securing what is best for customers. As an industry, our commitment to getting the auction right will result in ensuring it delivers for customers, businesses and supports the UK’s drive for growth.

While we wait for the spectrum to be cleared for us to use, we have been busy laying the foundations for our future network, making often innovative decisions to do so. In June we announced that we have partnered with Vodafone to create one super national grid to deliver two competing networks and operating independent spectrum with the aim of achieving indoor 2G, 3G and (spectrum auction permitting) 4G services to 98% of the population much faster than either of us could achieve independently.

We’re also actively building a new set of O2 tariffs for our customers, which will be fit for the world of 4G. From our trials in central London, we know that 4G will unlock a whole range of new and exciting products and services. In truth, the full potential of 4G is as yet unexplored, but what we can be sure of is that it will allow for a whole new world of experiences, and not just make the current one a little bit better.

I like to loosely apply the analogy of motorway lanes. It’s widely acknowledged that simply adding a new lane to the M25 does little for traffic management. The extra capacity merely results in more cars, driving at the same speed and in the same direction as before. The Olympic lanes, however, offered something new and supplementary to the standard commuter journey – a superfast route to the greatest show on earth. The difference is our 4G lanes won’t be reserved for the elite and officials, but accessible for those who want to experience the highest level of digital services. And similarly consider the high-speed Olympic Javelin train – a premium service for a whole new level of railway experience.

We can chalk this up as a monumental time for Great Britain, not just in terms of our ability to be the world’s best sporting stage, but also in our readiness to reach new digital connectivity heights. We’re fighting fit to make Britain truly digital and with 4G set to be the lifeblood of the digital economy, we can’t get out of the starting blocks quick enough.

Priority Moments for butchers, bakers and candlestick makers

We all know the pressure that small business are under and none more so than those trying to provide something different in their high street and local community. So, from today, we’re putting live the next phase in our Priority Moments service – but this time with a truly local twist.

From butchers, bookshops and bakers, to florists, hairdressers, driving schools and local tourist attractions, the next generation of Priority Moments will enable small local businesses up and down the country to create offers and experiences that are relevant, local and immediately redeemable, hopefully helping businesses to drive footfall, build customer loyalty and boost profit. And the good news about the service – it’s  completely free.

Small businesses told us that they struggle to find the time to market their business and that their focus is keeping your business going and staff happy, and that trying to find new customers or giving something back to your loyal customers is something you’d love to do. But, at the end of the day, it’s on a never-ending list of ‘nice to haves’. The service, which is completely free (just in case you thought it was a typo last time) to use, provides participating small businesses with complete control and flexibility over the offers and experiences they create, from the type and quantity of the offer, through to the length of the promotion. It takes three minutes to create an offer. That’s also the time it takes to boil a kettle, so whilst you make cuppa, create an offer and after 24 hours we’ll post it on the service.

We’ve also done some other things to help, working with lots of small retail businesses to develop the service. You can only run the offer for a week at a time to make it controllable and flexible, you can cancel it and we have given you lots of suggestions around what works – taken from our learnings around Priority Moments. The whole service is controlled by the small business – that makes it super flexible and can really help pushing the services that a business wants to promote. These could include anything from a glass of bubbly with a cut and blow-dry at the hairdressers, to end-of day-discounts at the florists or buy one get one free deals on pork chops at the butchers for a weekend BBQ.

Priority Moments will enable small companies in the UK to harness the power of digital, mobile and location-based technologies, reaching O2’s 23 million-strong customer network, and putting their brand on the map directly with the consumers they want to reach.

We’ve developed and built the service to enable independent businesses to respond quickly to the evolving needs of a changing consumer climate. With shoppers increasingly on the hunt for better value, special offers and unique retail experiences, Priority Moments enables local independent businesses to compete and gives local shoppers the opportunity to support their local retailers; encouraging business back to the high street and contributing to the local community.

The new service will help shoppers re-discover the benefits of the high-street by opening up a world of great value offers from hidden high street gems in their local area.  Have a look, as more of our small businesses sign up there will be loads of businesses that you will discover and love.

To find out more about the new Priority Moments  service for small businesses, go towww.o2priority.co.uk/local. And if you’re a small business already registered with the O2 network you can sign up and start creating your own Priority Moment offers today.

Introducing O2 Travel

From July we’re launching O2 Travel – our new proposition that puts our business customers on tariffs with domestic call bundles firmly in control of their roaming costs.

With O2 Travel customers will:

  • Only be charged £1.66 ex VAT for the days that they use data in Europe, up to 25MB a day
  • Have a connection charge of 42p ex VAT for all calls made and received in Europe. When customers make a call they’ll be using their UK minutes and calls allowance. Received calls are free up to 60 minutes and don’t use the UK minutes and call allowance.

What does this mean for our customers?
Eligible customers can now be in control of their roaming costs.

Making calls
Every outbound call will incur a connection fee of 42p ex VAT. After that customers are free to use their mobile like they do at home in the UK, with calls coming out of their inclusive minutes up to 60 minutes per call. After 60 minutes calls are charged at 30p ex VAT per minute.

Receiving calls
After the 42p ex VAT connection charge, received calls are free up to 60 minutes.

Data allowances and costs
When it comes to data, customers will now know that if they connect they will be charged £1.66 per day. This is for 25MB of data. We’ll send customers an alert when they reach this allowance.

Other charges

  • Calls back to the UK and within Europe outside of bundled allowance – 30p per minute
  • For each call that lasts more than 60 minutes, customers will be charged 30p per minute from the 60th minute onwards. This is charged in per second increments
  • Texts sent to the UK and Europe – 9p (free to receive)

Who can have O2 Travel?
O2 Travel will be available to SMB customers on tariffs with domestic voice bundles.
O2 Travel is not available for customers without domestic call bundles e.g. B4B PAYU, Mobex, Mobile Broadband, iPad & Data Only Tariffs.

When will we be telling customers about O2 Travel?
All customers on eligible tariffs will be communicated to from June.

How will customers take O2 Travel?
To benefit the most customers, we want to make sign-up as easy as possible. Eligible customers will have the opportunity to choose either our standard roaming rate or O2 Travel. We’ll be working through the details of exactly how this works prior to July.

My customer currently has a monthly recurring roaming bolt on, can I also add O2 Travel to their account?
If customers have one of our recurring roaming bolt Ons, then they will not be able to get O2 Travel until this Bolt On is removed. These Bolt Ons are My Europe Extra, Chosen Country Spain, Ireland Bolt On. Customers with the Blackberry Daily or Monthly Roam service will also need to remove the service before moving to O2 Travel.

Where can I get more information?
Further information on O2 Travel will be announced in the next few weeks.

Would you like Wi-fries with that? O2 Wifi on the menu at McDonald’s

If you’ve visited a McDonald’s restaurant in the last five years with your smartphone, laptop or tablet, the chances are that you’ll have updated your Facebook status or tweeted whilst tucking into a Big Mac. We’ve just announced a partnership with McDonald’s to continue this for the next five years, with O2 Wifi.

As with all O2 Wifi hotspots, accessing wifi while you eat will be fast, safe and free for O2 customers and non-O2 customers alike – and getting connected will be as easy as Apple Pie. You’ll only need to register with O2 Wifi once, either at McDonald’s or when visiting one of our other partners. Once that’s done, you’ll automatically connect to O2 Wifi whenever you’re in range of a hotspot. We’ve already started installing O2 Wifi in McDonald’s restaurants up and down the country, and we’ll have all 1,200 sites connected in time for what will undoubtedly be one of the busiest and most exciting summers the UK has ever seen. McDonald’s is the latest in a string of market-leaders to team up with O2 Wifi – we’ve recently announced partnerships with Mitchells & Butlers (who operate a number of favourite pub and restaurant brands like Harvester and O’Neill’s), House of Fraser and Tragus, the company behind the likes of Café Rouge and Bella Italia.

McDonald’s is no stranger to offering free wifi for its customers – they became the UK’s biggest free wifi provider in 2007. Each month, an amazing 750,000 customers are logging on while they enjoy their meals. In January 2012, they became the first company to join Mumsnet’s Family Friendly Wifi programme.  With O2 Wifi, McDonald’s can continue to offer almost 3 million daily customers a safe, free wifi experience. And, because O2 Wifi uses only premium public hotspots, it really will be a case of good food fast, and good fast internet.

Blackberry ‘Over the Air’ Software Loading

Today on Thursday 29th March, O2 UK will be launching BlackBerry Over The Air Software Loading (OTASL) as an additional way for our customers to control their BlackBerry software.

This service is available on BlackBerry’s purchased from O2 UK with Version 7 software or later only.  New BlackBerry software can be downloaded Over-The-Air over a WiFi network at any time.

BlackBerry 7 phones supported at launch include Bold 9900, Bold 9790, Torch 9810, Torch 9860 and Curve 9380. The Over-The-Air software capabilities for the BlackBerry Curve 9360 have been delayed and will be added towards the end of April.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express customers can use OTASL over the O2 mobile network as well as over WiFi. If OTASL is used over the O2 UK mobile network software downloads are automatically queued until 1am-6am (UK time). BlackBerry software can be downloaded over WiFi at any time.

In addition, the very first time a BlackBerry with version 7 software is turned on the BlackBerry automatically checks for any new software updates. If there is new software available, a “Software Update” icon will appear on the home screen offering the user the option to download over WiFi.

O2 change network equipment

Over the next 12 months, as part of the Telefónica Worldwide Strategic Plan for networks, we’re upgrading the 3G sites in every town, city and rural area north of Birmingham to the latest kit.

The next phase of our work will be in West Edinburgh (Cumbernauld, Grangemouth and Livingston) from 13 – 17 February 2012. The impact will vary depending on how many sites we’re working on in the area and how long the work takes.

This means that customers might not get 3G for up to half a day, depending on where they are. In most areas customers will still be able to use 2G, but data services (like the internet) might be slower. In a small number of cases, customer may lose their service entirely for a short time, however we’ll keep this to a minimum. Some customers won’t see any impact at all.

We’ve planned the work so that any disruption is kept to a minimum. However it has to take place during daylight hours, because our engineers will be climbing sites and using heavy equipment and need natural light to be safe.
